At-large candidate focuses on public health system
Duchy Trachtenberg has thought long and hard about what the newly elected County Council should undertake as its first order of business: reforming the county’s public health system. The health care and women’s activist has been at the forefront of these issues for more than 20 years and hopes to use that experience on the County Council if she is elected in November.

At-large race centers on planning, taxes, growth
The crowded race for the four at-large seats on the County Council has shaken out, leaving just nine candidates poised to shape the county’s policies for the next four years. ...More importantly, the results signaled an end to voters’ desire for rapid growth and development experienced under the present past councils.

Democrats support candidates who restrict donations from developers
In the contest for four at-large council seats, Democrats picked two candidates who, like Leggett, restricted donations from developers and campaigned to put more controls on growth. Duchy Trachtenberg and Marc Elrich finished closely behind council President George L. Leventhal and ahead of incumbent Nancy Floreen.

Primary election voters back slower-growth Democrats
‘‘If anyone had said four years ago that two at-large candidates could run and win without any development money, it would been thought that was impossible,” said Trachtenberg, a social worker and president of the Maryland chapter of the National Organization of Women.

Campaign contributions can compromise candidates
Duchy Trachtenberg and Marc Elrich, two serious at-large candidates also pledge not to take developer funds. In sharp contrast, Councilmember Mike Subin gets 83% of his money from developers.

Bill of rights
Several Montgomery County Council candidates last week rallied behind a "bill of rights" proposal that would create a living wage for immigrant and illegal alien domestic workers in the county. Democratic contenders Duchy Trachtenberg, Cary Lamari and Valerie Ervin were among the candidates who attended a press conference Tuesday to present a George Washington University study on the abuses of domestic workers -- nannies and housekeepers who are the female equivalent of predominantly male day laborers.
